The game mechanics, so friendly and frictionless, combined with bland scenario design to produce a game that felt less like a thrilling adventure and more like a weird optimisation race. But, in time, Second Edition proved to be a bit of a bust. So many of the old frustrations had been smoothed into a light and delicious powder like Banana Nesquik or – if I was writing this for Vice – Cocaine. In the early going, this new edition was a delight and a revelation. The second edition of Descent came when the fashion was for streamlining games. And yet, the game felt huge, epic and sprawling. It was deeply unfriendly, with one person playing as the evil Overlord and the others controlling a band of heroes who would grow to absolutely detest the power the Overlord wielded – the power to keep you up until three in the morning by spawning twenty kobolds in front of every exit. It took ages to play, caused arguments with your friends over rules issues, and loaded you up with enough fiddly cardboard tokens to choke that weird horse you met in Soho who likes getting choked. The first edition of Descent was a great game, and an absolute shambles. It was 2006, and I'd just played a board game called Descent: Journeys in the Dark. I’m talking back before Prince died, an event that would send the universe rattling onto the darkest timeline. All six heroes from the original game return to defend their legacy, each equipped with a new hero card and a variety of abilities to aid them in their battle against the impending darkness.First, let me take your hand – don't worry, I've recently sanitised and I'm double vaccinated – so that I can lead you back in time. They have to work together to battle against armies of dragons and the sinister machinations of the Uthuk Y’llan. The game sees players returning to Terrinoth, where they find themselves in an unlikely alliance with their greatest enemy, Waiqar the Betrayer. The Betrayer’s War builds on the exhilarating dungeon-crawling adventure of its predecessor by introducing new villains, quests, and mechanics. But let’s see what’s coming in the expansion. There are a ton of really detailed miniatures, however, and that has me excited. I haven’t taken any of the Descent game for a spin yet, so I cannot comment on how much fun it might be. I was skeptical of application based games before Lord of the Rings arrived at my house, but it works so well with that, so I’m confident in this. The entire game is driven by an application available on iOS and Android. Each character will have unique abilities that allow for unique experiences. This made me do a deep look into the Descent franchise, and I was incredibly impressed.ĭescent is a modular tactical adventure game where characters will move their characters through various areas (let’s call them dungeons) and complete objectives to move forward in the campaign. The expansion for Descent: Legends of the Dark is coming soon, with a foot tall miniature as the centre piece. I was thrilled when Asmodee, on behalf of Fantasy Flight Games, reached out regarding an upcoming expansion for a game I’ve hear about, but never played. And Descent: Legends of the Dark seemed to be the most popular! Tackling this game made me look at other modular tactical games, and guess what? Fantasy Flight Games kept popping up. Between a few ongoing campaigns, I’ve spent about 25 hours with the game so far, and have tons more to explore. It all ran me about $350+ dollars but it has been incredibly worth it. I bought the base game, the large expansions, and the three additional character packs. When I say I took a deep dive, I mean a legitimate deep dive. This modular board game from Fantasy Flight Games mesmerized me instantly.
